Benefits of internships – Importance (Read carefully you might be excited)

● Internships are the best methodology to prepare yourself before you go and join a new company

● Internships make you think about the practical aspects you need to improve compared to your college or grad school.

● They give you massive opportunities to understand your co-students and benchmark you to a better standard.

● They give you new ideas on your career path and gives you options to understand your aptitude for a particular job

● It is also a platform to evaluate your current skills vis a vis what is required so that you can make a gap analysis

● It gives you the best of the ability, a communication skill that most of us lack to coexist in an office atmosphere.

Out of all these skills, today central area, which is very much in the requirement for most companies, is communication skills.

Suppose you happen to get an opportunity in a multinational organization; the first requirement will be your ability to speak in English.

It becomes a challenge, especially when English is not our first language. Most companies that hire people at various levels and functional skills look for communication skills and good English fluency.

Certain areas like marketing, sales, and public relations need intense and good English communication skills. Even Though companies are interested in your functional skills, at the end of the day, if you are unable to communicate fluently with your colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders, then it does not give you any desired outcome.

Eventually, only when you can effectively communicate with people in and around you adds value to your profession. The manner and style today of most of the companies function, we get to understand invariably in a globalized environment, and multi-language, multicultural, and different belief systems are in place.

It becomes all the more critical that we need to keep in touch with the organization entire gamut to meet our objectives.

Effective communication plays a significant role in this and adds as a catalyst for achieving our goals. Also, in the corporate ladder, as days go by, employees need to manage a team, where members are from diverse backgrounds, and the one thing which binds all of the team members is the flow of communication from top to bottom, lateral and bottom to top.

When the communication is effective, people are cohesive and coordinate their work very well. It becomes easy to get things done, and we get the team effectiveness in terms of performance output. In the longer run, improving your communication skills from a particular level to the next level, like Leadership communication skills, becomes a must. The starting point and foundation is your internship training, where we understand the gaps and start working on them.

Over time, we can get a grip on this, improving our working relationships, output, etc. English is not your native language, or the first language is no more a show stopper if you understand the need for communicating fluently. Otherwise, you are stuck here, and despite all your talents in the domain area, it is evident that it becomes a stumbling block because of your lack of ability to communicate well. So to conclude, the starting point of an Internship is the best place to equip your skills.

Maybe technical skills, decision making or out of box thinking, etc.

When I worked for a Real estate company in sales, I found a young new intern from China, and he was an architect. He had so many accolades to his credit, and he is the best outgoing student in the college. I had a month close working with him for design inputs. His major challenge was communicating in English. He could not engage himself with the team as he was the only Chinese guy.

Even Though he was young, energetic, and intelligent, there was no proper orientation to put him through a structured program in making good on his deficiency of not being able to communicate. Eventually, he resigned and went back. Even Though we hired him for the specific purpose of using him well on his exemplary talents, despite all his skills, he felt fish out of the water just because he struggled to communicate in English. He is an intern, and not drawing attention, did not give comfort was also another reason.

It is a real-life incident where I realized that even though English is not knowledge, communicating in English is essential for your professional success, especially when you are in such environments.
